MONEY TALKS AT THE EXPENSE OF HUMANITY
Perhaps the most important human right today is the right of all people to live in a clean and safe environment, a right neglected by governments of all political persuasions, as if human happiness somehow depends on an ever-expanding economy. At a time when the proverbial excrement has hit the world’s air-conditioning system, Exxon Mobil proudly announces an annual profit of $51 billion.

By ignoring basic human rights and engaging instead in the money talk of big business and corporate interests, governments today devalue democracy and allow their offices to be used to create private affluence and public squalor.

Probably the best-known compilation of human rights is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) signed at the United Nations in 1948. Australia took an active part in drafting and implementing the UDHR at a time when an Australian, H. V. Evatt, was President of the General Assembly. Since its original good work at the United Nations, Australia has fallen behind the rest of the democratic world in the protection of human rights. For example, we are the only common law country that does not protect the basic rights and freedoms of its citizens with a Bill of Human Rights.

Many human rights have not been incorporated into the New South Wales legal system, and the main object of the Human Rights Party is to promote political candidates willing to work towards fulfilling the objects of the UDHR. Without basic protections for human rights in our legal system, executive governments manipulate parliaments and the courts to promote big business and corporate interests over the interests of citizens. The Human Rights Party will agitate state, federal and territory governments to ensure that a Bill of Human Rights is implemented in all jurisdictions of the Australian legal system.
